Joining a Programme

If you’re unsure of what programme would be best for you, our Guidance / Advice Team welcome enquiries and would be happy to talk you through your options – whether that would mean full-time, part-time or flexible learning.

To apply, you only need to fill out an application form and you’ll be invited along to an informal interview with the programme tutor and a member of our Advice Team. They’ll discuss your learning needs and personal circumstances – in complete confidence - and help you select the programme most suitable for you, whoever you are …

For School Pupils and School Leavers..

In partnership with Glasgow City Council, the College works closely with local secondary schools and provides vocational tasters and programmes for school leavers, early leavers and pupils who are still attending school.

College is SO not like school – it’s an informal atmosphere where tutors teach smaller groups, so you’re able to get the right amount of support and attention to help you come to grips with practical subjects and enjoy your learning. Everyone is treated (…and is expected to behave…) like an adult, and you’re encouraged to ask questions and work on your own initiative.

Many school pupils attend for a half-day per week while still carrying on with their school-based work the rest of the week. If you think you could benefit from this, simply speak to your guidance teacher at school to find out more.

For those leaving school, bear in mind that you don’t necessarily need qualifications before coming on to a programme at John Wheatley College - but if you do have experience and information about your achievements, we’d be delighted to discuss this with you at your interview.

For Adult Returners..

College isn't just for school leavers - and it's never too late to learn. For those of you who want to retrain, or to gain formal qualifications in a skill that you've spent your whole life doing, John Wheatley College could be just the place to do it.

Many of you may feel left behind by technology and a bit apprehensive about even switching a computer on. If so, the College's basic introductory programmes can guide you carefully and patiently through those steps and help you appreciate that you're not alone!

There's access to learning for all ages, with programmes designed to suit every age group. Part-time or Drop-in classes may be exactly what you're looking for to bring yourself up to speed with the technological age.

If you've been away from learning for quite some time, our staff understand that taking that first step can be quite daunting. At the start, many of our students lack confidence in their abilities and themselves. Added to that, there are financial and, possibly, other responsibilities in your life.

If you're undecided, our Advice Team can chat with you, in confidence, about what programme and mode of learning would benefit you most and help you to achieve your goals in an appropriate period of time.

All of our full-time and part-time programmes have core skills (such as computing and communication skills) built into them which will help you to develop your personal skills and self-confidence. If you have been away from the workplace for some time, we recognise that jobseeking and workplace skills may be an issue - and our programmes address this too, as well as providing the crucial vocational knowledge and qualifications.

In choosing from our wide range of programmes, we'll help you examine your long-term career aims and advise you on the best way to ensure your financial situation and responsibilities are taken into consideration.

The College has access to excellent childcare facilities or, if you have your own arrangements, we may be able to contribute towards costs of any formal childcare service.

Right throughout your programme of study with us, you will be encouraged and supported by our committed staff and excellent facilities.
