John Wheatley College recognises that the private, voluntary and public sector organisations form an integral part of our community and to help develop staff and volunteers within those organisations we provide a range of quality services and short programmes. Customised training, which meets the needs of your organisation, can be arranged together with the following statutory and professional qualifications.

Elementary Food Hygiene Programme

Aimed at: Food handlers from all types of establishments

  • Bacteriology
  • Food Poisoning & its Prevention
  • Premises & Equipment

  • Pest Control
  • Legislation
Duration: 7 hours plus multiple choice questionnaire examination

Progression:
  • Intermediate Food Hygiene programme
  • Certification and Registration with the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland
Cost: £60 per candidate

Scottish Vocational Qualification Workshops

Available in:

European Computer Driving Licence

This programme is designed to enable staff to gain essential computing skills and a worldwide-recognised qualification. The seven modules can be studied in any order and at a pace which suits the employee's needs. Available through flexible study the ECDL will help your staff to help develop the organisation and further its aims. For more information on this new programme, turn to our Computing section. HNC Social Care

This mainstream programme can also run as a part-time twilight class for people currently employed in the care sector/industry who wish to upgrade their skills and qualifications. More details are available on main course list page 10.


ILM Level 2: Introductory Certificate In Team Leading

Aimed at: Adults who wish to participate in Adult Numeracy and Literacy Services through volunteer opportunities or employment. The programme is aimed at those in employment who seek to gain accreditation or those who are unemployed and who may seek to take up volunteer opportunities.

Other Requirements: No formal entry requirements.

Progression:

  • Employment as Adult Literacies Support worker / volunteer, or working with young people and adults in a community learning setting.
  • T-Qual Pilot

  • Working with Adult Literacies Learners

Access to HNC Working with Communities

This programme links theory with fieldwork practice in the area of Community Development. 40% of the programme is undertaken in a workplace setting.

Aimed at: This is a part-time introductory level programme for people currently involved in, or who would like to become involved in, paid or voluntary community work. Alternatively, it can lead to those people interested in undertaking further courses of study in the area of Community Learning and Development.

Other Requirements: Applicants do not require to have formal qualifications but sound communication skills would be an advantage. Successful candidates will undergo an Enhanced Disclosure check.

Progression:
  • Interview for direct entry to HNC: Working with Communities at John Wheatley College.
  • Employment in the area of Community Learning and Development

A work placement in a Community Learning and Development setting is an essential element of the course.

Units Include:
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Working with Community Groups
  • Core Skills, including I T and Communications
  • Practical experience within a work placement
  • Reflective Practice

PDA Housing Law for Advisers

This programme links theory with fieldwork practice in the area of Community Development. 40% of the programme is undertaken in a workplace setting.

Aimed at: This programme is aimed at people who are interested in housing issues, or those who have recently entered employment within the housing sector. It would also be useful for those with experience in the housing sector who wish to formalise their skills and gain a qualification. The PDA provides an introductory level theory-based understanding of various components of housing related issues. The programme can be available on a day-release basis.

Other Requirements: Candidates do not require to have previous qualifications. However strong communication skills would be a distinct advantage.

  • Candidates may seek employment opportunities within the housing sector.
